Despite being restrained by his own mechanics in the Mclaren pit at Spa whilst trying to punch David Coulthard, 1998 was a relatively controversy-free year for Michael Schumacher. Universally regarded as the most talented driver of his generation, Schumacher's wages at Ferrari are allegedly more than twice those of the next best paid driver. After stringing five wins together in seven races mid-season, the German looked to be on course to deliver Ferrari's first title since 1983, but his hopes came to nothing when he stalled his engine on the grid at Suzuka, a schoolboy error after qualifying in pole. He made his Grand Prix debut in 1991 with Jordan, driving one race before being snapped up by Benetton. The following year he won his first race in Belgium and finished third overall. In 1994 he won his first Drivers' Championship title and successfully defended it the following year. In 1996 he joined Ferrari, finishing third overall despite ever-present aggravation from the car. A year later he was stripped of second place after a disgraceful incident with Jacques Villeneuve in the last race of the season.
